A Ladybug is always a Lady

I'm not certain where to start my story. Everybody seems to think that my story begins and ends with Santoria Junior, but I assure you, it did not start there. I can understand the confusion. I have, indeed, dedicated the rest of my life to taking care of her. But it is not out of love (fully) and it is not out of loyalty (completely) but Santoria Junior is a debt that is my duty to pay. A debt to her miserable ex-husband, Giovanni. Because of him I must spend the rest of HER life (for ladybugs like me live very long lives) carrying her in the harness across the oceans and guiding her through life. Santoria Junior is not like most girls and she can not walk the path of life alone, and so I am here to lead her.

The Life and Times of Santoria Junior

Everyone says that Santoria Junior looks just like me. They're right, she does. She looks just like me in every way, from her toes to the top of her head. And when people say this I understand that they are asking why, but all I do is reply, “She is my daughter.”
The Lie
The truth and the lie can be found in ones definition of daughter. Santoria Junior is my daughter in that I am the only mother she has ever know. She is my daughter because I gave her life. She is my daughter because I look after her and care for her well being, but most importantly, she is my daughter because I love her. The only way that Santoria Junior is not my daughter is that I did not conceive her. She is not of egg or sperm. I did not carry her in my belly for nine months. But still, she is my daughter.
